Volastra - Manarola
Discover the hidden gem of Volastra, a picturesque village in Cinque Terre.
Volastra served as the original settlement of Manarola, with its name
deriving from Vicus Oleaster, which translates to a cluster of olive
oil.
This ancient village, characterized by a circular layout, is believed to
have Etruscan origins followed by Roman occupation. Today, it is a
small hilltop community renowned for housing one of the Marian
sanctuaries of the Cinque Terre.
Additionally, it is the starting point
of one of the most scenic trails in the region, meandering through
vineyards, under the sky, and alongside the sea.
Visitors to Volastra can immerse themselves in the village's violet
hues, savor a glass of Cinque Terre wine, and take in the breathtaking
views, whether gazing eastward or westward. A must-visit is the
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health, which dates back to the 10th century
and features Romanesque architecture with later Gothic additions.
Initially dedicated to Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Manarola, the
church was first documented in 1240 and was later consecrated to Marian
worship in the 15th century. The structure is quadrilateral in shape,
consisting of a single nave without an apse, and houses an image of the
Madonna, crowned in 1861.
