Tramonti - La Spezia
Discover the hidden gems of Tramonti, Fossola, Persico, Schiara and Monesteroli along the Ligurian coast.
Tramonti is a region within the municipality of La Spezia, extending
from the ridge of the hilly terrain to the west of the "Gulf of Poets"
down to the sea, nestled between the territories of Riomaggiore and
Portovenere.
It serves as the natural gateway of La Spezia to the open
sea.
Tramonti is not precisely a singular location but rather a toponym that
designates the area; this coastal stretch, approximately 7 kilometers
long, is divided into four main localities, which from east to west are:
Persico, Schiara, Monesteroli, and Fossola. These names correspond to
clusters of houses, with Schiara and Fossola resembling small villages,
as evidenced by the presence of two chapels: one dedicated to St.
Anthony and the other to the Guardian Angels. These local festivities,
still deeply cherished by the community, are celebrated on June 13 and
October 2, respectively.
The landscape in this area is particularly striking; on clear days, one
can gaze from this vantage point across the Tuscan coast to the islands
of its archipelago. The islands of Capraia, Gorgona, and Elba are
readily visible, extending to Corsica. Turning westward and following
the curve of the Ligurian coast, the Maritime Alps with their
snow-capped peaks and the French border can be distinctly seen.
To reach Tramonti today, one can take the coastal road (provincial road
370), and after passing through the Biassa tunnel, turn left onto a
short stretch of limited-access dirt road to arrive at Fossola.
Alternatively, one may travel to Campiglia and then descend via the
staircase, experiencing breathtaking views along the way to reach
Persico.
Accessing the localities of Schiara and Monesteroli requires reaching
the Telegrafo area in the heights of Biassa, where there is an excursion
center for the Cinque Terre National Park. From there, one can continue
westward through a forest of pines and chestnuts until reaching the
destination.
