Le Grazie - Portovenere
Fall in love with the beauty of Le Grazie, one gem of the Gulf of Poets.
Nestled in a serene cove, Le Grazie is a pretty seaside town betweenLa Speziaand
Portovenere, in the Gulf of La Spezia.
The village of Le Grazie boasts ancient origins
and features a historic core centered around the Church of Our Lady of
Grace, the town's patroness. This 15th-century church, which has
undergone modifications in later periods, houses a magnificent wooden
choir intricately carved by Frà Paolo da Recco. At the heart of the main
altar lies the miraculous image of the Madonna, painted by Andrea de
Aste.
Adjacent to the church, the former monastic complex, once home to
the Olivetan monks and now largely converted into private residences,
contains the ancient refectory adorned with exquisite frescoes by the
painter Nicolò Corso, dating back to the late 15th century. Following
restoration efforts by the Superintendency for Environmental and
Architectural Heritage of Liguria, the former convent has become an
ideal venue for cultural initiatives, exhibitions, concerts, and
conferences. In the Varignano Vecchio area, one can find the remains of
the "Roman Villa of Varignano," dating to the first half of the 1st
century BC, located at the bottom of a small valley lush with olive
trees, abundant in water, and overlooking a sheltered cove that was once
an ideal docking site for small vessels.
The archaeological site is now
fully accessible, and plans are underway to complete a museum and an
educational pathway. The recent construction of two seaside roads and
the renovation of the ancient "Codevalle" trail now allow for pleasant
strolls in pedestrian-friendly areas that stretch nearly the entire
coastal region from the Bay of Varignano to Punta Pezzino.
